Natural Burial NOTES
There are over 270 Natural Burial grounds currently in the UK. Just over half are run by local authorities, the rest are run by landowners, trusts, not-for-profit organizations or just privately owned. You can even have a home burial in the UK without planning permission if you so desire. It can be a single grave or a 'small number'. The main proviso being that there is to be 'no material change of use'.
Having conducted a number of Natural Burials over the past ten years. The Service can be 'anything' (and everything) and conducted in the open (generally). A lot of pre-planning, organization and 'what-ifs' need to be thought about and taken into account. Many Natural Burial sites do not have, for example 'gazebos', out houses, or shelters (or even seats) for the unpredictable weather we have in England. It is not a problem, as long as we are prepared and know what to expect. Time of year and the length of the Service you would like are important factors to consider and to take into account.
The structure of the Service will totally depend on you and the character of the person that has died. This is what we will discuss and then create the elements to be placed in the Service.
Each Natural Burial site has their own rules and regulations. Many sites are the same, but some rules do need noting, adhering to and following. For example, coffins must be made of a perishable material (not steel, plastic or non-biodegradable). The coffin (as per a cremation Service or cemetery burial) must have the full name of the deceased on it. If you decide not to have a coffin (which is not a problem) the body must be wrapped in, for example a shroud. The body must then be secured to a solid board in order for it to be lowered into the grave.
This and more we can discuss and liaise with your Funeral Director - should you wish to use one.
