The Charity was formed in 1970 by Katharine and Harold Fisher as a condition Katharine found herself having; Agoraphobia. It is an anxiety disorder that is marked or distinguished by the fear of situations and places one feels anxious about or even sets off panic attacks. This disorder could be set-off by being in crowded places, open spaces or even spaces where there seems to be no escape or at least very difficult to escape.
With this disorder manifesting itself, Katharine and Harold set up The Phobics' Society from where they lived, in Chorlton, Manchester. The aim was to help others in the same or similar situation with help and advice.
Over the years with so many enquiries asking for help or advice, they have become a national organization continuing with their original aims and goals to help those with:
A wide and extensive range of help is offered from: Therapy, Calm Club relaxation and stress relief service, Webinars, to Courses and Groups. Clicking on a particular section on their website will outline the help, advice and support they can give.
Their website also gives four free downloadable guides: Understanding, The Caregivers, Student Guide and Anxiety and Nutrition.
